still at square one

Unemployment, day two. Still haven't gotten a resume written or distributed. That's gotta be today. In positive news I reanimated the box Ryan gave me. It turns out to be pretty good kit: 1.5Ghz intel processor, 512Mb RAM, 40Gb HD. The onboard ethernet works under linux, which is a fscking miracle. I've installed debian and brought it up as a household server. So there's some aspiration points I needed.

back to square one

Unemployment, day one. A large amount of my possessions are still at my former workplace, more than I can haul away in one load. Eric has already disabled my user account; good man. I wonder if they've been as prompt with the locks.

Mom recommends applying for uemployment immediately, and she's right. I also wish to get my home arranged properly. Juli's mom will be here in a few days, and she needs to find me in media res. I still get paid for the rest of November as part of the severance package, which means I'm paid to look for work; can't ask for better than that.

departure with tears

Well I was laid off from Evo Landing this morning. I guess this means I can blog again. Like as if that was the only thing holding me back. And yet I feel like my life could do with a reboot.

It's hard, being let go, but I'm making the best of it. I let them know, politely, tearfully, what a terrible decision I thought this was. Also I expressed my dismay at having only just seen our workspace expanded and a project manager brought onboard. I could have been a much more rewarding employee had they delivered on adequate workspace and oversight.

But I am only slightly bitter. If they succeed without me so much the better; perhaps their next python savant will be much better treated. I am relieved to be free of the burden of maintaining their visionary software's underpinnings. I have plenty of resume polish thanks to Evo; and a better idea of what I need in an employer. I hope to hit the ground running.

Let this mark an end to my days as a blogmonger. Here is the ultimate failing of my duty: I couldn't even keep the inanimate blogs online. I let the registration slip, and then when I tried to get tricky and catch it on the rebound, someone else registered it before I could. I could likely pay them like scalpers for the domain back, but I'd as soon call an end to it here. It's been over for years now.

Change the numerical assumptions, and you'll change the numerical conclusion. Make the discount rate 1 percent instead of 5 percent, and you can justify spending up to a whopping 62 percent of our incomes on climate control; lower the discount rate to 10 percent, and you can't justify spending more than 8 percent of our incomes.

It's a chaotic system! No really, the lorenz equations are only twice as unpredictable. No wonder we can't agree of climate strategy, when small variations in worldview lead to huge differences in cost-benefit analysis.
